Except in the case of women of the town and women who had renounced the family to live a life of shame (w-eftuh) consent was of no imporance except in mitigation of the sentence with the only exception that where a girl: el9ped with a man of higher caste the man was deemed to commit no offence by reason of the consent of the girl.. [...] But the honour of the family was more the concern of the caste-men than of the head of the family and the sanctity of caste rules and the prevention of the great evil of the breaking down of caste organisations which must result from the unchastity of women was a matter of the gravest concern to the society and the State. [...] The husband of the Plaintiff predeceased her father-in-law and after the death of the latter his widow in the exercise of the autholi y conferred upon her took the Defendant in adoption.
