the Bill that the Government of India proposed to embody in the Act the safeguards proposed to be embodied in the Bill to amend the Defence at the Realm Act in England. [...] So far as we can gather from the debate in the House of Lords on the 4th of February last the Lord Chancellor gave an assurance that the provisions of the Act would not be relaxed against aliens but that the right of British subjects to be tried by a Judge and jury and necessarily the right of appeal would be restored by the Amending Bill. [...] We reproduce below an article from the columns of our English contemporary of the jaaw Journal on the Bill recently introduced in tarliament by the Attorney-General for the amendment of the Defence of the Realm Act pursuant to the pressure of influential public opinion against the principles of the Act. [...] If the members of the special tribunal do not care to conform even to the fundamental 'principles of the law of evidence or the rules of ordinary procedure prescribed for the fair trial of an accused person he will be absolutely without any protection of the law of the land. [...] Militarism was here riding rough-shod over both the constitutional and common law of the realm and none the less was this the ca se because the Regulations made under the Act provided that " ordinary civil offences will be dealt with by the civil tribunals in the ordinary course of law ".
