1927

The part that the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council plays in settling disputes between the self-governing members of the _British Comonwealth maye'be illustrated by the judment (report) that has been recently delivered by the Lord Chancellor in In tllr Mailer of Ow Labrador Peninsula. [...] The bone of contention was the meaning of the term Coast.” The matter did not conic before the Judicial Committee by way of an appeal. [...] The decision turned on the meaning of the word “Coast.” The Labrador Coast was in the occupation of Newfounland. [...] This principle the Judicial Committee found was further supported by the fact that the jurisdiction of Newfoundland in 'the matter of administration of justice was not limited to the coast-line but had extended far into the interior under the directions and Statutes of the Nefoundland Government. [...] The section is quite clear and the words leave no room for doubt as to the right of the accused in a warrant case who is acquitted to a copy of the judgment free of costs.
