The meeting this week of the Round Table Conference on the Government of India is likely to hove a decisive influence on the relations between Great Britain and that diversely-peopled sub-continent It is in the Prime Minister’s striking phrase the very birth of a new history. [...] The matter may appear academical for in fact DO Change of this nature would be attempted without the consent of the Princes; but the basis of the existing Paramountcy of the British Crown is it question of constitutional and Sir William Holdsworth’s article deserves careful study. [...] Whatever may be the constitutional reltionship between the British Crown and the Ruling Chiefs since the transfer of the Government of India to the Crown in 1858 it can hardly be questioned that the treaties concluded with the rulers of some of the more important States were entered into by the East India Company on behalf of the British Crown and the rulers of such States as between Sovereign [...] All the same we admit that the Government of Idia with the assent of the Secretary of State for India having exercised the right of determining succession to interfere in the interest of justice or for the maintenance of peace and order or in cases of mimanagement misrule as also in various matters of domestic administration have acquired sovereignty over such States.
