That worth that is the intensity of the competing desires varies with the varing ideals of the time and the task of the Judge is to carry on a process of perpetual adjustment between past philosophies of law and present ;weds. [...] To THE EDITOR CALCUTTA WEEKLY NOTES." SIR In the 12th number of the Calcutta Weekly Notes dated the 8th February 1932 I have read with great interest and profit the discussion which you have raised in your editorial columns regarding the legality of the cuts in the pay of the Hon'ble Judges of the Indian High Courts. [...] You further say that " up to now the views of the Hon'ble Judges have not seen the light." I beg to point out however in this connection that in view possibly of the constitutional difficulties involved in the question although a Bill was passed in the House of Lords it appears that the Hon'ble Judges of the Idian High Courts were exempted from the operation of the Bill as will appear from [...] The report after stating that the second reading of the Bill was moved by the Marquess of Lothian refers to Lord Lloyd's elaborate protest against the Bill as affecting the iterests of the Civil Servants and as involing a breach of faith and his request for rconsideration of the same. [...] But still the interest of the controversy which is as fascinating as it is 'instructive remains although it is not quite clear whether the Hon'ble Judges in England have been put under the operation of the English Bill if the Indian Bill in the Lords really exempted the Indian Judges as the report of the " Statesman " seems to suggest.
