The Calcutta Weekly Notes November 17 1947

1947

Indeed the way in which peace has been maintained in the two Bengals the way in which the citizens of Calcutta for example have come forward and organised themselves in order to prevent communal disorder and all manner of antsocial activities that grew to unspeaable dimensions in wartime and have contnued since is a great and glorious example to the rest of the country. [...] To members of the Bar Sir Brojendra's appointment gives unalloyed pkasure for he was for many years a leading light of the Calcutta Bar filled with distinction the offices of Standing Counsel and AdvocatGeneral and rendered useful service as Law Member in the Viceroy's Executive Council. [...] Lord Mountbatten at present in England made a speech in London on Nehruji's birthday which we feel was extremely felicitous and abslutely in keeping with the spirit of the occasion and the character of the man whom the meeting wished to honour. [...] We offer our heartiest felicitations to Pandit Nehru on his birthday and epress the hope that the spirit of the great man might spread to all sections of our people and cleanse their minds and souls of that ugly dross which has so cruelly difigured Indian life in recent months. [...] That was not to be however and the hand of death callous to human wishes has snatched away a man who should have been spared if the Biblical span of life is a criterion of hope for many a long year to come.
