In the end on the initiative of the Deputy Speaker the matter was amicably settled. [...] Thereafter a Select Committee was appointed to enquire into the statement made by the Deputy Speaker and “ to rport whether such action was consonant with the proper and impartial discharge of the duties of his office.” So far as the personal conduct of the Deputy Speaker was concerned the Committee reported that he had acted bond fide and with the best of motives in trying to bring about a[...] Attlee made a statement in Parliament on 17th June last that a rule which had the concurrence of the Speaker would be framed to the effect that the Chairman and the Deputy Chaiman should in future refrain from acting in a professional capacity on behalf of or against members of the House of Comons. [...] Although the question arose in regard to the Deputy Speaker the principle would be the same in 'regard to the Speaker also.
