The proceedings in the Calcutta High Covrt in the matter of Prizes have resulted in orders transferring the custody of enemy vessels to British authorities and their detention in such custody during the pendency of war. [...] During the sack of Pekin it was admitted on all hands that the Indian troops showed far greater respect for the life property and honour of the men and women of the Cninese people than any other troops of the allies. [...] Under the rules of the Original Side the judgment-debtor is absolutely helpless and is placed completely under the mercy of the solicitor of his adversary. [...] The main grievance of the poorer litigants of the Original Side is the method and the scale of remuneration of solicitors and the absence of the ad valorem scale of payment with a maximum fixed such as is prevalent everywhere 227"ccxxviii THE CALCUTTA WEEKLY NOTES. [...] The Lou CI-2ANCELLOR remarked that the argment on behalf of the Petitioner turned upon* pure question of fact and the credibility of evdence and that it did not come within the rule THE LORD CHANCELLOR.
