The Calcutta Weekly Notes. Monday February 8 1937

1937

With reference to our observations some time ago on the dilatoriness of the High Court office in the preparation of PapeBooks the Registrar of the Appdlate Side is reported to have observed that he would much prefer individual cases of delay to be brought to his notice to an agitation being carried on in the press. [...] Our comments are based on materials collected by members of our staff and when we find that the materials are sufficient to warrant criticism of a general character we draw the attention of the authorities to the defects that anpear to have crept into the administration of the office. [...] The text of the Insurance Bill introduced in the Legislative Assembly is not before us but from the outline of its provisions sketched by the Law Member in moving a reference to a Select Committee it would appear that the proposed amendments are niain+y concerned with securing the sovency of insurance companies and honest dealing by them with the policy-holders' money. [...] Sushil Sen the well-known solicitor of the Calcutta High Court who was selected as a Special Officer by the Government of India to revise the Idian Companies Act has published the text of the Act as it now stands incorporating all the amendments made by the Act. [...] The Insolvency Court has power to direct payment of money out of the estate of the insolvent in the hands of the Official Assignee for the purpose of meeting the expenses of defence of the insolvent against a criminal charge.
