Two-thirds of the people are agriculturists and the remaining onthird whether craftsmen traders or unskilled labourers exists mainly for the disposal of the agricultural produce and for the supply of some of the wants of the agricultural population. [...] The somewhat disproportionate increase in urban population is not due to any industrial development but to the opening of the railway in 1886 and the consequent development of Liven as an export centre for cotton and other agricultural produce and to the transfer of the taluka head-quarters thither from Karajgi in 1896. [...] The roads of this part of the taluka bring almost all the villages into easy communication with Hubli with the railway (which also passes through Hubli) with the markets and the rice and garden regions to the west of the taluka and with the local baztir towns (Haveri Karajgi Agadi Devgiri Devihosur). [...] As between these two regions the cost of taking the cotton to Hubli does not increase in proportion to distance from that place the effect of the railway being to lesson the cost of transport from the more remote region while leaving that from the nearer region unaltered. [...] On the other hand as I have endeavoured to show the opening of the railway in 1886 stimulated and changed the route of the export of agricultural produce and Haveri became a convenient centre for those engaged locally in the business of export.
