Honorary Fellow of the Asiatic Society of Bengal ; Fellow of the British Academy ; Honorary Member of the Nāgarī Prachārinī Sabha the American Oriental Society The Société FinnOugrienne the International Phonetic Society and the Bihār and Orissa Research Society ; Foreign Associate Member of the Société Asiatique de Paris; Corresponding Member of the Kōniglicbe Gesellschaft der Wissenschaft [...] 727 ff) gives a short vocablary and a few phrases of the language and remarks as follows :— ' The Barakis are included in the general term of Parsiwan or Tajak ; they are original inhabitants of Yemen whence they were brought by Sultan Mahmad of Ghazni ; they accompanied him in his invasion of India and were pre-emnently instrumental in the abstraction of the gates of Somnath. [...] The Barakis of Râjan in the province of Lohgad who speak Persian and the Barakis of Barak a city near the former who speak the language called Baraki ; Sultan Mahmad pleased with their services in India was determined to recompense them by giving them in perpetual grant any part of the country they chose ; they fixed upon the district of Kaniguram in the country of the Waziris where they set [...] In spite of the warning conveyed by Leech in the last paragraph of the passage quoted above I think that I have been able to show that Ormuri while it has in some respects developed on independent lines is in the main a close relation of the languages and dialects of Western trail.
