Monthly Survey of Business Conditions in India April 1940

1940

2. The Survey contains two parts : the first part consists of separate notes dealing with the various economic activities of the country and describing the economic conditions of the month and the second gives the necessary general statistical data dealing with production trade and financial conditions. [...] The progressive figures must not therefore be understood as necessarily representing the sum of the monthly figures shown in the table or the sum of the latest month's figures and of the progressive figures published in the preceding month. [...] At the beginning of the month the markets were rudely shaken by the rumours that the restrictions imposed by the Goernment of India on the exports of certain oilseeds to neutral countries with a view to conserve their supplies for the Allies might be extended to other commodities also. [...] K generally swayed according to the movements in the commodity markets but the prices of many prominent scrips at the close of the month recorded appreciable gains as compared with the previous month. [...] Stocks of sacking cloth and bags at the end of April 1940 were 18.0 crores of yards and registered an icrease of 0.4 crores of yards as compared with the previous month and of 4.5 crores of yards as compared with the same month of last year.
