The historic announcement of 3rd June 1947 regarding the partitioning of the country followed by the final acceptance of the plan by the two major political parties eased the political situation considerably. [...] The improvement may be ascribed to short-covering for ready delivery prior to the expiry of the existing quota and to the reserve on the part of the mill sellers who have for the most part adopted a cautious policy in view of the uncertainty of future government action in regard to taxation of jute and fixation of minimum prices for the new crop. [...] the upward movement of the prices during the latter part of the month. [...] As compared with the area reported in the corresponding forecast of the previous year these figures show a decrease of 3% in the case of jowar and bajra and 4% in the case of maize.
