In Bombay the directions of the Chancellor for the election of the Syndicate have raised a great outcry among the members of the Law Faculty. [...] THE close of the year suggests a brief review of the progress made in English education during the last twelve months and of the present state of feeling in regard to the more urgent points of educational policy. [...] To the vacant Chair of English Literature at the University of Birmingham the Council have appointed to the satisfaction of all who appreciate the pluck and persistence Of his pioneer work on behalf of the teaching of English Literature Mr. [...] Is not the same true of the student ? The Commission however recommends that philosophy take the place of History and Economics as the compulsory subject on the ground that in addition to the importance attaching to the truths it embodies it has like mathematics a high disciplinary value in the traiing of the mind." Having spoken already of the " truths" of philosophy we venture to add [...] Sargant first visited the Transvaal and the Orange River Colony he found that a number of schools had been opened in the latter along the line of the railway under the administration of the Military Governor but that the Military Administration of the Transvaal gave no encouragement to education.
