The recommendations of the History Sub-Committee : " 1. That "the teaching of History should commence with securing a knowledge of the map of the country concerned " and that "throughout the course a knowledge of the places referred to should be part of the lessons. [...] " it being the duty of the latter " to detect traces of model answers and cram methods of study and to mark accordingly." r 1. That " as the greatest difficulty in the way of an intelligent study of history as probably also of all other subjects except Mathematics is the language difficulty " the necessity of the total suppression of the vernacular in High Schools except for the purpose of teac [...] From lessons on the geographical phenomena of the locality and the general principles they illustrate the instruction may proceed to the geography of the surrounding region and so with increasing generality to that of the province and the country and finally the geography of the continents and the world in the broadest outlines of their structure. [...] A first course of Geography such as is here suggested would suffice for the pupils until they reached the fourth class and would include the following :—The elementary principles of Geography illustrated as far as possible from the home region ; the use of the globe and something of the.relations of the sun to the earth ; the use of the compass plans and'maps ; the reading of a map and its c [...] The reason is that the bulk of the Marathi population resorts by preference to the Municipal and Aided Schools and this is the fact that accounts for the preponderance of Marathi schools both Municipal and Aided over the Gujarati and Urdoo schools of the same denomination.
