The reader may be aware of the manner in which continuous records are taken of the variations in the height of a barometer by means of a pencil and a drum of paper made to revolve by clock-work. [...] When we talk of the path of a particle of air set in motion by a vibration we conceive of a similar record shoing the movement of the particle in relation to time above and below a horizontal line which represents the position of the particle when at rest. To form the A minor scale 'low D' must be use [...] Occasionally as in the Norwegian final cadence F A C' C G C' EV A is treated as part of the chord of F ; the powerful effect of the cadence is due to the fact that the chord F A C' is a foreign chord.
