Fleet showed that the meaing of the name Kaca ( glass crystal ) is quite different from the meaning of the second component of the word Ghatotkaca {having the hairs of the body standing erect). [...] Now the absence of Samudra Gupta from the capital at the time of his father's death is a gratuitous assumption and the only proof alleged for the intrusion of Kaca is the not certain inferiority in the purity of gold of Kaca's coins4. [...] We only wish to elucidate the number of his capaigns in the country north of the Vindhya mountains."88 Annals of the Rhanclarkar Oriental Research Institute All the authors of Gupta history speak of one campaign in Arydvarta during which Samudra Gupta defeated the nine kings named in 1. 21 of his Allahabad inscription besides several other kings not named but included in the same line. [...] This final downfall of all the allies seems to be presupposed by Rana when mentioning the one of Nagasena in the 'Hama Carita In Padmavati" says he " there was the fall of Nagasena heir to the Naga house " '. And the Vi§nu Pureina and the Vriyu Purtina clearly refer to the occupation of the territory belonging to the Nagas by the Gupta Emperors : " Nine Naga kings will enjoy the city Campdvat [...] The accusative merely_ denotes extension in time without reference to the accomplish ment of an action which latter is the function of the instrumental P. 2.3.6 ). This type of the instrumental is connected with the sociative type.
