For the concetion of the shape of India we have however to turn to the Mangovinda Suttanta of the Digha Nikaya a Pali text and to the itnerary of Yuan Chwang the celebrated Chinese traveller.' Nor have we any such conception of the world and the place India occupies in the system in the same way as we have in the Brahmanical conception contained in the Puranas and the epics. [...] It may be described as having extended in the east as far as the city of Pundravardhana in the south to the city of Saravati on the river of the same name in the west to the twin brahmin villages of Sthana and Upasthana and in the north to the IThiragiri mountain. [...] They were the Venuvana on the side of the Kalandakanivapa the Naradagrama the Kukkutaramavihara the Grdhraktita hill the Yastivana the Uruvilvagrdma the Prabhasavana on the Grdhrakiita hill the Kolitagrama etc.
