In the western part of the Damodar valley area and in the more southern fields of the Peninsula the coal seams are confined to the lower—Barakar—stage 'of the Daniuda series the strata equivalent to the Raniganj measures being unproductive. [...] The effect of igneous intrusions on the Gondwana coal seams of north-eastern India particularly those of the fields situated within the eastern part of the Damodar valley is of very considerable importance and has an important bearing on the question of reserves of the littter quality coals. [...] Both occur in the lower part of the Eocene one varying up to 4 feet in thickness in the eastern half of the Salt Range east of the Indus river and the other usually 3 to 7 feet thick in parts of the Surghar-Maidan Range west of the Indus. [...] As previously mentioned the low sulphur coking coals occur almost wholly in the eastern fields of the Damodar valley area and are confined principally to the Barakar coal measures though certain of the lowest seams of the Raniganj coal measures of the Raniganj field are also of value in the production of metallurgical coke. [...] C. S. Fox a discussion on a number of the aspects of the coal problem of India stook the form of a symposium held under the auspices of the National Insttute of Sciences of India.
