The Rg-veda and the Sämaveda supply only limbs to the body of the sacrifice in the preparation of -which it is the Yajurveda that is solely instrumental.= Sdyarra would hence conclude that the Yajurveda is the foremost among the Vedas.. [...] To those who profess to accept the authority of the Vedas but yet feel diffident to accept the authority of the Atharvaveda also Jayanta would point out that their attitude is improper; when Jaimini 12 the author of the Mirniinisti-sutras propounded the infallibility of the Vedas or when both Kat:K.1(1a" and Ak5apada" made a similar declartion they meant all the four Vedas; the Mimathsakas ca [...] The next objection against the Atharvaveda taken up by Jayanta for answering is that the Atharvaveda teaches not the sacrificial cult that is the main theme of the three other Vedas and that it consequently deserves its divorce from the pale of the Trayl. [...] To this it may be objected that all this refers to the practice of the followers of the Atharvaveda and that in the opinion of the followers of the Trayi it is enough if the Brahman knows the threfold Vidya (trayi-vidyd). [...] Keith says "He (=Subandhu) appears first in Bana who mentions in the introduction to the Harsacaritam1 the Vasavadatta as quelling the pride of the poets and in the Kadambari" in celebrating his own work he uses the epithet atidvayl surpasing two which is believed to refer to the Väsavadatta and the Brhatkatha of Gunaclhya.
