Indian Culture (Journal of the Indian Research Institute) January - March 1946

1946

The excellent character of this new Journal and the high standard of articles published in it and the enterprise and devotion of the group of the Bengali scholars seem to make Indian Culture rightly and completely fill the great void created by the unfortunate discontinuance of the great epoch-making Journal the Indian Antiquary. [...] The recent discovery of the present writer of the coins of Bhavanaga in the Naga series of Padmavati shows almost conclusively that this Naga family was the Bharagiva family of the Vakataka records. [...] If we accept Jayaswal's theory the close resemblance between the silver coinage of the Kshatraps and the Guptas will show that the latter were the feudatories of the former. [...] The theory of the Naga leadership in the movement against the Kushana rule towards the beginning of the third century has therefore to be abandoned. [...] If the numismatic evidence proves anything it is the utter absence of any connection between the Yaudheyas and the Nagas and not the overlordship of the latter over the former.122 INDIAN CULTURE course of Indian history sanguinary and decisive battles against a northern power have been usually fought in the Delhi ridge.
