The oxygen which is liberated is believed to be carried to the roots of the paddy plants dissolved in the irrigation water (Harrison and Aiyar (5' ). Brizi was the first to point out the significance of algae in the aeration of the higher plants and his contention is supported by Harrison and Aiyar who conclude that the surface film' of algae is the chief agency in the aeration of the roots of ri [...] Preventive measures which suggest theselves are the improvement where possible of the drainage in low-lying land in order to induce deeper root growth and the removal and ploughing in of weeds at the beginning of the dry season which will have the double effect of increasing the humus14 content of the soil and at the same time of reducing the compettion for water in the soil. [...] The plasticity of the rubber is calculated from the the formula 1 1 S2 So 2 t wlien So and S are the thickness of the rubber under the metal disc at the beginning and end of the time internal t. From the results obtained with the two mastications the amount of mastication required to reduce the rubber to a fixed plasticity is calculated. [...] The change in the colours of the latex after the addition of calcium salts differs for different trees as well as to the intensity as to the nuances of the discoloration. [...] The investigations on the occurrence of oxydases in the latex have in the last time been extended to a number of clones ; we came to the coclusion that the enzymeous colour-reaction can be used as a mark of identi fication for the clones ; the reaction is useful for the recognition of clones and for the examination of the purity of clones either as an independent characteristic or as a supplem
