The Tropical Agriculturist. The Agricultural Journal of Ceylon September 1938

1938

The most authoritative figures are found in the report of the Director of Statistics on the agricultural census of 1929 undertaken in pursuance of the proposals of the International Institute of Agriculture at Borne for a world agricultural census. [...] Pure line Vella?: illankalavin paddy was used the seed being sown broadcast at the rate of 2 bushels per acre except in the case of the transplanted plots of one of the experiments. [...] As a result of soil erosion the surface soil containing most of the available nutrient material and the bulk of the organic matter is bodily removed thus seriously reducing the fertility of the soil. [...] The soil to form the ridges is obtained from the cutting of the contour drains on the upper side of which the ridges are constructed. [...] The sides of the drains were cut straight and all the excavated earth bunded on the upper side about a foot away from the edge of the drain.
