Bulletin of the Calcutta Mathematical Society April 1909 (April 1909-January 1910-1913)

1909

If we should give up our attempt to render accessible the results of the researches which have placed Poincare at the side of the five or six great mathematicians of the nineteenth century and in the forefront of the mathematicians of the twentieth century it need not perhaps be the same with the method employed in those researches. [...] The angle 0 is that which the projection of the generator on the xy-plane makes with the x-axis and the generator itself makes an angle 0with the xy-plane. [...] All these surfaces might be called Mains surfaces and the number 2-9 which is the ratio of the rate of twisting to / the rate of curling might be called the pitch of the corresponding surface. [...] If the origin is transferred to the point x= — a z =0 andithe axes of y and z are then turned through an angle of 45° about the x-axis so that the oblique axis becomes the new z-axis the equation of the surface referred to the new axes is i'(x y z) x:(3y—z)+2y2(y +z)-4.zxy=0. [...] If the equation of the surface is taken in the form (w y z) =0 then any plane through the initial generator (for which 9=0) is of the form z=y tan a. To obtain the corresponding section the axes will first be changed to a new set by the transformation scheme X y 1 0 0 hi 0 COS a -- sin a 0 sin a cos a and then in the transformed equation z will be put equal to zero.
