In time however the ill-adjustment of the man to the machine the effects of long hours unhealthy working conditions and the sudden expansion of the towns told on the health of the workers ; but only when the effects were painfully obvious in physical deformity stunted growth and premature death were active preventive measures taken and a series of Factory Acts passed and pit into operation. [...] The investgators spent months and in some cases a year or two in the factories and firms obtaining the coperation of the staff and confidence of the workers discriminating and analysing the factors to which the waste and inefficiency were due.. [...] But the sting of the whole affair lies in the fact that it is not the real intention of the Governments to raise and civilize the natives. [...] The specious plea of reforming the natives only serves the purpose of ousting the hated Indians! The motive power which has urged the Goverments of these parts to train the natives in all the handicrafts is not any desire to lee them uplifted but the desire to Brush to 41 Indians by forcing up the lower buffer ! If any proof of this very patent fact is wanted it is amply supplied by the measu [...] But as said the higher posts in this Department because the Railway is a Government Department in Kenya are going more and more in the hands of Europeans under the plea of efficiency and the lower posts are similarly going more an more into the hands of the natives under the plea of economy and native interests and thus the Indian is gradally being crushed between the buffer of efficiency
