This revelation will revolutionise the traditional concept of the Indian civiliztion in the eyes of the world and will establish for ever the foremost position of the Vedic civilization in the World History. [...] The sum of 2268 years he says (I 5o ff.) added to the 653 years commencing from the beginning of the Kali era to Gonanda's accesssion and the 1328 years for the duration of all reigns described in the subsequent books (Books II-VIII) gives 4249 of the Laukika era or 107o year of the Saka era which as the chronicler tells us is the exact date of commencement of his work (The above is based on [...] The legend of the Nilamata is narrated in the form of the answer of the sage Vaiampdyana to his interlocutor King Janamejaya as to why no Kashmirian king took part in the Great War 'although the land of Kashmir is the chief of those situated on this earth" (See Nilaraata or The Teachings of Nib ed. [...] Kalhana's mention of the buildings of towns vihäras and caityas by the `Turuska' (really Kushan) kings and of the possession of the greater part of the land by the Buddhists in their time appears to be quite authentic.
