the Kassapiya the Samkantika and the Sutta the five associated with the latter were the Gokulika the Ekavyoharika the Pannatti the Bdhulika and the Cetiya. [...] These six separated from the rest in Jambudvipa while the Dhammaruci and the Sdgaliya separated from the rest in the island of Lanka.' The northern tradition about the grouping of the schools is preserved in the 9oth volume of the sutra of Bstan-hgyur from the works of Vasumitra Bhavya Vinitadeva and others. [...] The factions into which the Mahasämghika gradually divided itself were the MahHsamghika the Ekavyivaharika the Lokottaravadina the Bahurutiya the Prajfiaptivadina the Caityaka the Piirvagaila and the Avaragaila.2 A comparison of the two accounts mentioned above will show that much there is in common betWeen the two though the southern tradition appears to be earlier. [...] Through these we get a glimpse of the lives of the various elements which contituted the society of the period: the ryot and the Zemindar the English sojourner and the Portuguese settler. [...] The worship of the linga of Rudra with the symbol of the Devi playing an important part in the composition of the cult object is propagated by the renowned sage Upamanyu.
