1908

The figures for the three years are very uniform and demosh ate that the longer the crop is allowed to grow the heavier is the outturn of fibre. [...] The appraiseme at figures show that there is very little difference in the quality of the fibre of the crop cut at the last four stages so taking everything into consideration especially the supply of water for rotting purposes the fourth stage when fruits are *being formed is the best stage at which to cut the jute crop. [...] The copious rains of April did away with the necesity of irrigation and during the following three months there was sufficient rain to enable the crop to be at its best with the result than when the flood of rain came in August (29.31 being recorded instead of 13.31 inches) the crop was sufficiently strong and high to withstand the excess of water with little damage to itself. [...] Gunceat.—Seed time for this crop in this district is the third week of March to the first week of April and harvesting will take place from the last week of July to the end of August. [...] Then these bundles aro carried to the steeping pit immersed in water and kept under by means of bamboos In 12 to 14 days the rotting process is completed when the fibre is taken from the stems and washed in the cleanest water of the steeping pit.
