[...] Over and above these the sowing of the seed and the various stages of the harvest till the reaping are celebrated with special songs by the men and women of the tribe amidst tribal dances and ceremonies. [...] Another festival of the Santhals is the Baha or Spring festival which celebrates the Sal-blossom season and is the occasion of a cycle of folk-songs many of which contain poetry that is simple spontaneous and fragrant of the 'smell of Mother Earth' to use a phrase of Tagore's. [...] On the second day of Baha members of the tribe accompany three actors representing their gods to the jungle where one of them shoots at the Saflowers with his bow and arrow another climbs the tree to pluck them and the third gathers them in a chequered napkin and hands the flowers to the priest of the tribe.
