The New Review May 1937

1937

The crux of the problem is this : what kind of men and women is a modern university expected to produce ? The scholar or the leader ? We do not mean to imply that the conception of education changes from age to age or from country to country : the ideal of the Athenian Academy and the Indian Brahmacharyd is eternal. [...] The undegraduate most of all and even the postgraduate in his degree has to be educated by the clash of minds and wills which a corporate life provides and by the unotrusive ascendancy of the best and greatest men and women the world possesses to think and act rationally to examine and judge to distinguish and decide. [...] The communist type is the State farm or Sovkhoz not only is the land like all land in Russia the property of the State but the use of the sovkhoz land and its produce belongs to Government or to one of its dep'arments. [...] The whole Party all our workers Party and non-Party must take the problem of stock-raising in hand bearing in mind that the problem of stock-raising is as urgent as the grain problem— now successfully solved—was yesterday.'. The great lesson of the Russian agricultural experment is the failure of the Soviet farm compared with the collective farm. [...] Both have heartily cursed it for the rise in the cost of the daily necessaries of life as well as for the 'jittery' financial situation which threatens the Army's programme of aggrandizement on the one hand and the survival of industry and trade on the other.
