[...] In the Epilogue at the end of the last of the eight bulky volumes constituting the work we read : 'In closing the survey of a wide historical period such as the Middle Ages the student must inevitably be impressed by the relativity of history and be conscious that he looks at the past through the medium of his own time that contemporary perpleities and dominant factors will appear to him in [...] In the preparation of the nations and chiefly of the Hebrews for the great event he saw the meaning of the pre-Christian ages ; in the pilgrimage of the Church down the centuries he discovered a means of interpreting all that had happened since the Incarnation. [...] The Turkish peril and the rise of heresy gave the Church so much to do in Europe that the Popes had to rely on the apostolic zeal of Spain and Portugal to fulfil the duty of evangelzing the heathen.
