The New Review October 1938

1938

The 'returns from the U. S. S. R.' e most sensational being those of -idre Gide in France and Eugene ions in the United State-- have opened e eyes of the public at large to the mity of the propaganda of the iends of the U. S. S. R'. [...] Three weeks after the Lu Kou Chiao incident the continuous fighing on the outskirts of Peiping and the manoeuvring for position had resulted in the withdrawal of the Chinese garrison from Peiping (on the night of July 28-29 1937) to prevent the destruction of this capital city. [...] THE SINO-JAPANESE 'INCIDENT' 305 within 30 miles of the walls of the city and the sound of gunfire and aerial bombs has remained a familiar feature of life in the northern capital throughout the year under review. [...] The materialist will assert that this consists of 'grooves in the grey matter of the brain' that preserve early impressions as a little notch in a sapling will show itself in the form of a gnarled knot in the bark of the full-grown oak. [...] The psychology that maintains the existence of a spiritual soul in man is fully prepared to concede that the brain is the instrument of the soul and as a shaky sound-post in his fiddle will make of no effect the utmost skill of a Paganini or a Joachim so a diseased brain will baulk the efforts of the soul to manifest itself adequately.
