Beginning roughly with the Boer War the introduction of rapid-fire small arms and cannon and later the combination of the entrenched machine-gun and the barbed-wire etanglement tilted the balanced between the defense and the offense markedly in favour of the former. [...] A philosophy which seeks happiness in the security of material satisfactions and which refuses to sec the tragic aspect of human nature and which refuses to see the reality of God and God's demands and which refuses to see the reality of the Devil and of the dangers of the Devil and which refuses to see and to accept the sacrifices required by justice and by charity is incapable of making people [...] However humble the realizations of democracy have been however little one has seen of the 'goverment of the people for the people and by the people' however gross the social injustices in the very shade of the Mother of Parliaments the English soldiers are convinced that democracy is worth fighting for and that totalitarianism must be opposed at all costs. [...] In the course of the survey operations which were carried on regularly the total acreage and the extent of tax-free lands in each village the extent of lands paying revenue or rent the quantity of paddy or other grains due and the amount of money to be paid to the State were all ascertained and correctly noted in the registers. [...] The principles of the settlement of land revenue depended on the notion of rent realized by the State and were applied according to the relative advantages of the different pieces of land the cost of cultivation the quantity of yield facilities for irrigation and other similar factors.
