About half a dozen poems in this volume are purely lyrical expressions of the young poet's desire : Eros in his purest and best now and then draws aside the curtains and peeps and speaks ; the sky the earth the trees the sunset dye of dusk night's ebon glow the serene break of dawn the garden perfume the yoiceless music of the stars the ebb and flow of the seasons the moonshine and the mo [...] Under the blue bright sky in the scif t cold of the morning in the painted brilliance of the evening with the bacground of the sky-kissing whiteness of the Himalayas in the far off North surrounded by the green and eypleasing hills the valley spreads in resplendent grandeur. [...] The hillock is a continuation of the Bhimdhunga hill a curved jutting towards the East and is separated by a chasm from another hill on which stands the chapel of Manjusri the Chinese incarnation of Buddha to whom the lgend ascribes the humanising of the valley and installation of the self-existent therein out of a lotus flower—the common belief is that the hillock was a lotus flower —by a sup [...] In the centre of the western side which faces the stupa and reminds one of Kapilavastu the house assumes the dimension and shape of a temple commonly of three stories each roofed with tales which376 THE NEW REVIEW rise in diminishing proportions to the uppermost roof which supports the crown-work of a pinnacle. [...] chaityas : the Jalasayana Vishnu at Buddhanilakantha the Nyatpola images the images of Soorya and Chandra on the gate of Siddhapokhari at Bhatgaon the Garuda image in front of the Krishna temple at Patan lions in the Kumaristhan the pillar at Attacknarain the elephant at Ranipokhari : all belong to the medieval art of Nepal but look as simple and magnificent as the earlier works.
