1942

Now if ever it is the right and duty of the press to offer tempen:.te and obiective criticism of mistakes and failures in the production of the implements of war in the organzation of our war effort and in the use of our armed forces. [...] The restriction of these melancholy incidents to the irreducible minimum should be the limit of our hopes ; and that limit is likely to be approached in such measure as the censorship is prvented from becoming the protection of the brainless and the conscienceless.' It is not only the right but the duty of the press to expose mercilessly to the public view all incompetence neglect and failure [...] Finally the Allies have developed a spirit and power of offensive ; the commando raids on the Atlantic coast the mass air raids on the Rhineland the attacks of the American fleet on Japanese invading forces the continued attempts of the Russian armies to break through the Eastern front are so many welcome signs that the tide is turning. [...] Alyosha himself confesses to being `just the same' as Dmitri ; the latter has gone higher in the ladder the former is at the bottom but the process is the same ! The unchartered sea of the unconscious is a mysterious prepotent and terrible thing ; its superficial calm may be no more than the prelude to the storm that is to follow ; it will not therefore do quite to ignore it. [...] In The Possessed moreover Dostoevsky makes one of the very minor characters the narrator of the story as well : this the method followed in Wuthering Heights and Lord Jim certainly adds to the piquancy of the narrative.
