The New Review June 1944

1944

The dismemberment which struck Poland from the roll-call of European nations was indeed the prelude and partly the cause of the turmoil to which the continent has just been submitted. [...] The journalist and the official can both play for safety behind the screen of polsyllabic vagueness in the usual announcement to the public or in the dispatch from one of those well-informed circles and authoritative quarters. [...] 'It cannot in the opinion of His Majesty's Government be classified as slavery in the extreme acceptance of the word without some risk of terminological inexactitude.' It is he who has since ordered his officials to be brief and simple of speech and showed them the way to brilliant brevity in his war-time appeals to the nation. [...] The Nazi High Command preserve their strength for all-out blows at the critical time of the invasion This curtailing of operations this is the only safe conclusion shows that the rate of replacement of planes and sumarines has been brought down below safety level and that the fate of the war will be staked on one or other gigantic coup. [...] On the other hand the fact that the enemy lost not less than 1 579 planes on the ground and the Americans 76 only shows that the U. S. A. A. F. had most of the intiative throughout the year though this also is hidden in the statistics published.
