[...] The fundamental obstacle to India's education as a country therefore as to the education of India's women is the want of suitable leacher& And the training of teachers who can teach through the medium of the pupils' mother tongue is the first need if the unreality and secondhandness of our educational system is to be remedied. [...] The first reform therefore to be made towards the introduction of the mother tongue as the medium of instruction is the selection of teachers from the very places and speaking the very languages of their future labours. [...] The wind blows on her or plays about the house sighing softly rustling trees rippling the shining leaves of the tall old pipal above the little village temple ; and she hears the plaintive noises of the night the singing and grinding of some other woman the wailing of a child somewhere the sudden thin bleating of startled goats the sad lowing of a tired bullock or of a cow grieving for her
