[...] THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE METHOD (1) The Stimulative Stage.—If the theory that mental expansion (or development of the powers of thought) is the forerunner of self-expression be accepted as a hypothesis it follows that efforts to expand the mind of the pupil to encourage thought and to teach the ways of clear welordered thinking should be the first cares of the teacher of English copo [...] of the desire of the pupil for self-expression involves the cultivation in its highest form of theart itself for with the growth of the desire there must come almost of necessity an equal or corresponding growth of the ability necessary to satisfy the desire. [...] The probable number of vacancies may be ascertained through the Inspector by the end of April and the examination be held in the month of May when all the competitors can easily compete.
