Education November 1932

1932

At the beginning of the session the Society should meet for the election of new members ( where this method is in force ) and then fo.r the election of officers and committee and the committee should meet shortly after to draw up a programme of events for the whole session. [...] Professor Lindeman's story of what each member of a family gave up to buy a needed violin for a gifted child and of the fine feeling that resuled because the violin belonged to the family and because the girl had the privilege of addIng to the family's happiness by playing it seems to me to illustrate a good method. [...] In such situations as well as for the larger purptse of promoting the general social education of public school teachers it is especially fortunate'"( 484 ) that the World's Federation of Teachers Association offers the opportunity for the study of the possibilities of developing on a world scale a type of teacher that is superior to the kinds we now have. [...] Instead of feeling themselves responsible for the proper progress and development of the students they shift the whole burden of responsibility to the boys' parents and spend their whole energy and enthusiasm in giving the parents of at least 60% of their boys repeated warnings that their wards are weak all-round and they would be degraded to the lower class or kept in the same class for another [...] It will be the endeavour of the Committee so to organise the Exhibition as to make it serve not only the the teacher but also the non teacher by demonstrating through the exhibits *hat modern educational outlook tends to be and what modern teaching as an art and a craft is or is to be in the hands of the twentieth cItTury teacher.
