Meanwhile in the City of Bombay itself the Elphinstone Institution had been started iu 1827 by means of the efforts of the Native E lucation Society who managed to collect suscriptions amounting to over two laklis of Rupees for the ptirpose of-perpetuating in a suitable manner the memory of the Hon'ble Mountstuart Elphinstone on his relinquishing the Governorship. [...] The progress of instruction is well illustrated by the development of the chief Educational Institutions of the Bombay Presidency a brief notice of which will now not be out of place."2 5 The Deccan College which is the oldest college in the king dom " of Bombay was as already stated started in 1821 by Sir Mountstinavt Elphinstone who diverted a portion of the Dal shins grant of the Peishwas [...] The Fergusson College was at first affilated to the Bombay University up to the standard of the Previous Examination in Arts; but subsequently the College was recognised for the whole Faculty of Arts. [...] The Calcutta Pr( idency College was instituted by means of the conversion and amel ration of the old Ilindu College which had been founded in 1816 and various Collegiate Instittions were stimulated into activity In 1857 the Calcutta Univesity was founded and in the same year the first entrance examiation was held whereas the corresponding examinations at the Bombay and Madras Univer [...] Travelling over to the Punjab we find that in 1869 the Lahore University College subsequently the Punjab University College was established for the purposes of promoting the diffusion of European science as much as possible through the medium of the local Vernaculars; and of encouraging the study of Vernaculars and the Eastern Classics.
