Nor do the classes who receive the benefits of the present system of English education desire a change in the medium of instruction as it enables them to enter into intelligent contact with the social life and the intellectual aspirations of an imperial race which is the very incarnate spirit of progress and which is the most vigorous and inspiring of all that have swayed the destinies of men. [...] We have seen that the framers of the Despatch as well as Lord Macaulay rightly conceived that the cultivation and improvement of the vernacular languages is the essential preliminary to the intellectual and industrial ameliration of the masses of the people. [...] Seated aloft Oil the heights of meditative reflection the sages of India in the olden time reasoned severely on all the problems of life and the universe discovered all the great laws and truths of the spiritual world and brought all the resources of human dialetics to the task of defending and fortifying the metaphysical basis of the universe so as to place it beyond the reach of cavil sne [...] The improvements proposed are the exten sion of the gallery along the blank wall behind the President's chair and if sufficient funds can be raised the redecoration and relighting of the Hall the renovation of the furniture and certain aherations in the lobby. [...] McTaggart of Trinity are the main opposers of the request on the ground that the admission and encouragement of so narrow a system is a piece of false and mistaken latitudinarianism and liberalism and contrary to rather than in accordance with the movement which led over a quarter of a century ago to the abolition of the University Test Acts.
