The growth of the new society implies new ideals of living together a change in the patterns of individual and collective behaviour— a the part of the individual a re-orientation of outlook a resolution conflicts in the world of beliefs a re-organization of the objective ideas a new and higher rationalization ; on the part of the co11ective group a harmonization of old loyalties a tolerance [...] The victories of the British in the wars of the early years of the nineteenth century and the enormous expansion of wealth as a result of the Industrial Revolution bred in their minds a sense of the superiority of British civilization and a cotempt for the defeated civilization of the east. [...] It was essential that this class should understand the language and sympathize with the culture of their masters in order that it might interpret the ideas of the rulers to the uneducated masses and explain the feelings of the masses to the rulers. [...] The practical demands of administrative covenience strengthened the argument for the establishment of schools forTARA CHAND 101 all' irrespective of religious bias the adoption of English as the medium of instruction the emphasis on science and English literature and the relegation of the classics of India and their rich store of literature into the background. [...] but when it comes to the application of these in the case of the marriage of our own sons and daughters of breaking the purdah of our wives and sisters of refusing to perform the worship and the ritual we have lost faith in of dining with men of other castes of repudiating the agitators who desire to aggrandize themselves under the cloak of communal and religious movements etc.
