What is the modern counterpart to the ancient hero of adventure ? One recollects the Statesman paragraphs and Times of India illustrations that have appeared on the school notice-board in the course of the last few months : the excavations at Mahenjo-daro with all they reveal of glory in India's ancient architectural past ; the assault on Kinchinjunga ; the latest dash for the Poles. [...] Weaving ' has proved an illuminating topic with its beginnings from the intertwining of leaves in the days of the cavemen ; its evoltion through the Egyptian handicraft ; the contest of goddess and woman inevitably recalled by the myth of Arachne and Minerva ; mediaeval tapestries ; modern life and the clash between mill and home industry epitomized by the present khaddar vogue. [...] Firstly our method of approach is often too logical and mathematical with the result that the pupil who has little aptitude for mathematics is either terrified at the difficulty or bored with the dulness of the opening stages—for example the definitions of units and measurements of lengths areas and volumes. [...] How much more beautiful and efficient is nature's prism the raindrop than man's and how can our clumsy imitations of rainbows in the classroom compare with nature's splendid demonstration of colour ? 2. Make the utmost use of human interests in the lives of great scientists not forgetting the pioneers of science in the east for example Geber the Arabian alchemist whose work is mentioned by [...] Honour is made the highest ideal for the boys and the scout law on which the movement hinges and which is binding on every scout is actually taken from the ancient code of the knights.
