To these schools this new series the first of its kind will be welcome as affording an interesting and well-thought-out scheme of teaching lasting throughout the period in which the pupil passes through the primary and middle stages—linking as it were the Montessori work of the infant classes with the manual training °work of the senior pupils in high schools. [...] THE TEACHING OF PLURAL CLASSES The logical consequence was to divide every subject of study into two broad lines—namely the portions in which direct teaching by the teacher is essential; and secondly the other portions in which the pupils can go on with the work with only occasional aid from the teacher. [...] We got courage to proceed with the experment and the result I give in the Inspector's words: `One great benefit that will be derived from a system of this nature is that the writing out in advance of the work to be done in a definite period of time will aid the teacher in systematic teaching and in apportioning his time regularly throughout the year. [...] The other benefit is that as soon as the boys in class V become accustomed to working mainly by themselves as the boys here have evidently become the teacher is relieved to that extent of class work and is enabled to devote the time gained to the lower classes which have hitherto been comparatively neglected.'
