The criminologist often detects crime by psychological tests; the doctor thanks to the researches of Freud Jung and others now realizes that the origin of many diseases is psychic and that their cure depends on psychic treatment; the industrialist makes use of large-scale psychological tests to obtain the greatest output of work by studying the effects of fatigue and the effect of better livi [...] The teacher must be in possession of all the material and instruments that will help him in measuring accurately the mental state of the children in his charge just as the doctor must have accurate scientific instrments like the thermometer or the stethoscope to enable him to treat his patients. [...] The meaning of the words will be given to enable the pupils to follow the line of thought but no attempt will be made to have the words used in the pupils' own sentences. [...] H. R. BHATIA IMPROVEMENT IN ENGLISH UNDER A LABORATORY SCHEME OF INSTRUCTION THE purpose of the present paper is to record the results of an experiment in self-study methods of instruction in the teaching of English in High school classes. [...] Errors of language were indicated by means of a system of symbols affixed in the margin which drew attention to the nature of the fault in each case and enabled the pupils to detect and correct their errors.
