The Coference in fact was the work of the Madras Teachers' Guild and the credit of its success must be attributed in the main to the energy and labours of the Rev. [...] It seems that an undergraduate of Christ Church College had written an article in the undergraduate organ the Isis of an objectionable nature reflecting on the character of the Dean of Christ Church the Head of the College. [...] The junior members of the College took the matter into their own hands and shortly before midnight on the last Sunday in November the unfortunate writer was seized and " ducked" in the foutain pond in the centre of the great quadrangle known as Tom Quad. [...] His genial and courteous manner on the one hand and the official experience he had gained as Registrar of the University on the other enabled him to secure the hearty co-operation of his coleagues in the administration of the college to command the respect of all his subordnates and students and thus to maintain the prestige of the institution. [...] Duncan was in Europe on furlough in 1879-80 he submitted a dissertation on the Psychology of the Upanishads to the University of Ediburgh and received the degree of Doctor of Science from the authorities.
