As for the clergybeing in the forefront of those who know the advatages of education it is but natural that the clergy as a class should take an interest in such matters seeing that the superintendence of the education of the young is looked upon as part of their parochial duties. [...] The same year saw the commencement of a Schlarship scheme which did away with the last traces of the old custom of taking boys into the College without the payment of fees and restricted 'free scholarships' to successful competitors in examinations in the various districts of the Presidency. [...] The aim of this paper is to draw the attention of teachers and students to a method of determining maximum and minimum values which while being as interesting and easy as the method based on the discussion of the roots of the general quadratic equation possesses the advantage of being applicgble to cases involving expressions of a higher degree than the second. [...] The former of these gives the minimum value of the area and the latter the maximum value. [...] Therefore the equation of the tangent at the point (xi yi) of the ellipse is ?MI a2 62 The parts cut off from the axes of the ellipse by the tangent are obtained from the equation of the tangent by making y and x respectively equal to zero.
