But while duly acknowledging the great concession which the appointment of the Comittee to consider the relations between the University and the Affiliated Colleges involves we must confess to a feeling of disappoinment as regards both the composition of the Committee and the way in which the Hon'ble* Dr. [...] The Vice-Chancellor in order to give an appearance of fulfillment to this prophecy took the somewhat strange course of including the numbers of students at the Universities of the Punjab and the NortWest Provinces on the ground that these istitutions are but offsprings of the Calcutta University. [...] The question is asked why should the Hindu be more backward in his knowledge of the Vedas than the Muham-- madan is of the Koran ? But surely the writer overlooks the fact that Muhammadan boys gain their knowledge of the Koran at the expense of their general education and that it is the disproportionate amount of time which they give to this study which so serously handicaps them in the race [...] work is no less than the building up from elusive spiritual materials the characters of the boys and girls of the rising generation : the teacher is again in his way a jeweller to whose care is committed the task of shaping and polishing the rough diamonds on whose untutored minds he has to stamp the impress of the zeal of knowledge ; and finally the teacher is in his way a doctor dianos [...] the general health may be compared to the traders who in order to supply the public with the delcacy of p6V de foie gras deliberately aim at enlarging the liver of the geese they fatten to the detriment of the whole of the rest of the bird.
