The Educational Review. A Monthly Record for India November 1897

1897

The writer who can be none other than Sir William Hunter himself an Indian historian quotes from a speech made by the unfortunate Professor Gokhale " We (that is the Indians) were the first to emerge from barbarism ; and my nation was not only great but was the greatest of all on the face of the earth long before anyone had heard of the older States of the West." Sir William Hunter is altog [...] The fun of it made the suggestion a success." The young correspondents are interested in writing to an unknown person and the task of writing in a foreign language becomes a labour of love. [...] We have now reached the iitage at which the word `map' may be introduced because the next step is to draw the plan of the village or of that part of it which is near the school. [...] In drawing this plan the teacher can simply and informally introduce the idea of proportion by calling the attetion of the class to the fact that one house is twice as far away from the school as another. [...] It may be that the map of the world would not now present any more difficulties in interpretation than a map of the district but the child is far more likely to appreciate the latter.
