For the detemination of active ingredients and fatty matter in surface-active agents" Hart extracted the solution of the substance in saturated brine with organic solvents weighed the residue from the extract after distillation of the solvent and noted the loss in weight on ashing. [...] The difficulty met with in the process was that after about 4 hours' extration the material in the thimble set to a hard mass and the penetration of the solvent through the column of solid became difficult. [...] All the wetting agents with the exception of Product M which is a "levelling" or retarding agent were found to help the absorption of the dye by the yarn the absorption at the end of 2 hours being greater when a wetting agent was employed in the dye bath. [...] The possibilities of the use of the two types of auxiliary agents accelerating or retarding the absorption of dyes would be worth closer investigation with regard to dyeing problems such as the dying of viscose and the dyeing of cotton in package dyeing machines. [...] In the case of carbon dioxide a layer of pumice at the inlet of the silica tube served the purpose of superheating the gas.
